A museum walk and getting shushed

Saturday we took the girls to the Field Museum for the day.  Our goal is to buy a  membership to a different museum in Chicago every year.  Winter days are cold, snow filled, windy, long.  Last year we had a membership to Shedd Aquarium.

It was fun.  Since we have a membership, we are quite lackadaisical about our time there.  We checked out an exhibit, learned more about Sue from an excited museum guide and played downstairs in the kiddyland.  Polly dug the music room, especially the xylophone.  Lainie and Zo made clay pots in the arts and crafts area.

It was the first time at a museum where Polly was fully aware of and included in her surroundings.  She walked proudly, arms stretched out over her head for balance.  Her walks were focused.  She spotted a location and then stepped out, gingerly, but still, she stepped out.  A lot of exhibits had large red buttons at a perfect height to be pushed by a toddler.  Polly found every button and giggled with delight while listening to a monologue about a cougar or the squeals of a seal.

Sergei and I enjoyed watching our children enjoy their surroundings.  We were all satisfied with a lazy, gray Chicago afternoon, half-hazardly interested in the Aztec ruins, mostly just interested in each other.

Earlier that morning I was chatting away to no one in particular in the kitchen while loading the dish washer.  Polly waddled over to me, put her chubby little palm on my leg and put her other hand up to her face, her index finger pointing upward.

She shushed me.

I was told to be quiet by my two-and-a-half year old.

An eventful Saturday all in all.

Oh, it must be so nice to live in a city that has so much to do. I haven’t been to the Field Museum since I was a kid.
